This is how you can get the freshest food possible.

Container gardening is great for people, who do not have a big yard, or any space for a garden.

Also contianer gardening gives you more control over soil quality, fertilizer, watering and allows you to move the plants if sunlight or temperature needs to be varied.

Thin Your Plants for a Bumper Organic Food Crop

In this video, I share an important gardening tip; Thin Your Plants. Whenever you scatter seeds, you are sure to get way more plants growing than you need. If too many plants try to grow in too small a space, they will all just be thin and scraggly. That’s were thinning comes in. You can eat the early thinnings just like you would sprouts. – Assuming it’s an edible plant like lettuce or greens, you would not eat tomato or pepper plants for example, just the fruit.

The other way to thin, is to get another container, fill it with organic potting soil and/or compost and transplant some of the seedlings into it. Be sure to bring some soil along with the roots, you want to disturb the roots as little as possible. Water it in good.

You don’t have to thin all at once, you can do some every couple of days as the plants grow. The bigger they grow the more room they will need. When you give each plant some good root space, as well as space above the soil, they will grow to a good size and you will be happy with the crop.

Be sure to check out Herbfest.net for more tips.

In the old days, when all food was organic, the soil contained a good supply of minerals.

People eating those plants, that grew in the soil, got a good supply of nourishing minerals.

These days, farming practices are different. Plants are still sucking up minerals, when they exist in the soil, but people are only adding back a small handful of nutrients.

Nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus, think 10-10-10 fertilizer – is often enough to make the plants grow and look good. But something is missing. the minerals. If most of the minerals were sucked up by previous generations of plants, growing on the same plot of ground, how many minerals are actually contained in the food crop?

Humans not only need the major minerals like calcium, magnesium and the small list contained in many multi-vitamins, but trace minerals as well. There is some debate over how many trace minerals humans actually need for good health. Trace minerals are found in very small quantities, much less than say calcium. Some of them are important for good health.

Fertilizing the soil with organic methods like animal manure and green manures, helps to ensure a good supply of minerals in the soil.

As for me, I not only like to eat as much organic food as possible, I look for supplements that contain trace minerals. Coral Calcium is one such supplement.

Disclaimer: I do earn income from some of the products, linked from this site. If this interests you, please use the comment box below.
And here is anther tip, I always use sea salt, instead of regular table salt. One of the key differences; trace minerals. Of course you don’t want to overdo it on salt.

Go Green With House Plants

It is know that many modern building materials can off gas toxins in a building. Things like formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, benzene and other harmful gases. Plants can help mop up some of the mess from the air, so your lungs don’t have to, or at least lessen the impact. Many modern household cleaning products are also guilty of releasing toxins into the air.

Here is a list of some of the better plants for indoor use:

Spider plant

Areca palm

Bamboo palm

Dwarf date palm

Boston fern

Janet Craig dracaena

English ivy

Australian sword fern

elephant ear philodendron

Peace Lily

Rubber plant

Weeping fig

Plants that do well in shade are usually best suited for indoors.

A note of caution, some plants can be toxic to pets or children if eaten. Keep this in mind when selecting and placing your indoor plants.

I would love to hear about your favorite indoor plant, along with care and watering tips. Please use the comment box below to share your thoughts.

So the audio is not perfectly synced with the video in this clip. Nobody’s perfect!

One of my favorite ways to balance my pH is to drink an organic, cleansing herbal tea. It acts as a very gentle colon cleanse and helps to remove toxins from my body.
